Kee Klamp Fittings Remain the Peak of Reliability After 75 Years

Kee Safety’s renowned KEE KLAMP range has proved that opting for fittings over fabrication when installing a handrail is the best option, with fittings installed on the top of New York State’s Whiteface Mountain in 1937 still in place and in great working condition today.

Whiteface Mountain is the fifth-highest mountain in New York, and one of the High Peaks of the state’s Adirondack Mountains. The summit offers a 360-degree view over the range, stretching on a clear day to views of neighbouring Vermont state and even Canada.  As one of the most popular ski-resorts in the northeast of America, with around 70,000 visitors a year, effective safety measures are a vital consideration. Almost 75 years ago, just before WWII, a complex handrailing structure was fitted using KEE KLAMP fittings to provide support and guidance for people ascending to the top of the 4867 foot high peak.

“We are delighted to hear that our fittings are still in great condition after so many years,” explains David Hill, Marketing Director at Kee Safety.  “This project highlights the durability and longevity of the product. Being installed high up on a mountain means the fittings have had to withstand extreme cold, wind and snow for the last 75 years, and yet are still providing excellent structural stability. It is an amazing result and definitely one way to test the strength of the KEE KLAMP range.”

At Whiteface Mountain, KEE KLAMP fittings run alongside a footpath, which mixes steps, ramps and sudden changes of direction from the visitor car park to the top of the mountain, which is home to Whiteface Castle and an outstanding viewpoint for visitors.

KEE KLAMP fittings are capable of creating a versatile range of tubular structures, able to cope with frequent changes in direction and height levels and removing the need for welding and drilling on site. This makes installation simpler and far quicker, with no special tools required. These simple to use, galvanised malleable cast iron fittings allow pre-cut lengths of standard tubing (from 21.3mm to 60.3mm) to be connected together to form handrailing and other types of tubular framework structure. Using KEE KLAMP fittings results in a finished structure with uniform appearance which meets guaranteed design loads.

All fittings within the KEE KLAMP range incorporate an integral socket screw which locks the fitting securely onto its tube to give an excellent slip load performance. Today, fittings are available in a powder or anti-bacterial coated finish. KEE KLAMP tubular fittings are manufactured to the requirements of BS EN 1562 & 1563.
